Why is the effect of moxibustion not obvious?

"Moxibustion" — prolonged application of heat is moxibustion. Some illnesses show significant improvement after just a few sessions of moxibustion, while others may take several courses of treatment to get better. However, there are conditions that require moxibustion for months, half a year, or even over a year to heal. Therefore, many practitioners of moxibustion may wonder: Why is that the case? Experts in moxibustion believe that the differences in therapeutic effects are mainly due to the following reasons:

1. The depth of the illness varies.
Illnesses that are closer to the surface are easier to treat, while those that are deep-seated are relatively more difficult to adjust. The deeper the illness within the body, from the skin and hair to the muscles, tendons, and marrow, the more challenging it is to treat. For illnesses on the surface, the warmth and medicinal properties of moxibustion easily reach the affected area, and the condition naturally improves quickly. For deep-seated illnesses, the heat and medicinal properties of moxibustion are harder to reach the deep lesion areas, or the heat and medicinal properties that reach these areas are significantly reduced. This is because each layer of the body absorbs a certain amount of heat and medicinal properties, leaving less to penetrate deeper.

2. The location of the illness differs.
Illnesses in the meridians are easier to treat, while those in the six fu organs are more difficult, and those in the five zang organs are even more challenging. If there is a blockage in the meridians, unblocking them will suffice. Some conditions that appear very severe and were expected to take months to improve may show significant improvement within a few courses of treatment, and some are almost completely healed in less than a month. In fact, their illnesses are still at the meridian level.

3. Whether there has been a change in the physical form of the illness.
Illnesses that have not changed in physical form are easier to treat; those that have affected both the internal and external aspects and have undergone physical changes are more difficult to treat. What does it mean for the physical form to have changed? For example, the growth of tumors, endometriosis, gastric ulcers, etc. If there is a tumor, do not expect to get better after just a few sessions of moxibustion; it may take several months. If some organs have atrophied or even aged, it is impossible to expect a quick recovery and a long-term commitment to moxibustion is necessary.

4. The duration of the illness.
Short-term illnesses are easier to treat, while long-term illnesses become increasingly difficult to treat. The longer the illness persists, the weaker the vital Qi becomes, affecting more areas, potentially deepening the illness, making it harder to treat. Seek treatment early and do not delay.

5. The patient's physical constitution.
Patients with a good constitution recover quickly; those with a poor constitution recover slowly. On the surface, the illnesses may appear the same, but some people recover much faster. Although the illnesses may appear the same, the internal factors and the overall constitution of the person differ. A good constitution means strong vital Qi; a poor constitution means weak vital Qi, which naturally leads to a slower recovery.

6. The patient's mental state.
Patients with a peaceful mindset recover quickly, while those with a negative mindset recover slowly. People with a peaceful mindset have more unobstructed meridians, allowing for smooth flow of Qi and blood, making it easier for the therapeutic effects of moxibustion to enter the body and expel pathogenic factors quickly. Distrust, worry, fear of being deceived, and suspicion are all negative emotions that can sink and turn into damp-cold, entering the viscera. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, "dampness" is considered the mother of all diseases, and "cold" is the root. People who are easy to trust experience significantly better and faster results from moxibustion because "trust" is a positive and uplifting energy, which is in line with the Yang energy of moxibustion. Conversely, those with negative emotions recover more slowly.

7. The patient's temperament.
People who are impatient, irritable, easily angry, and like to find fault recover slowly. These emotions are considered harmful Yang, forming false fire that rises to the heart, lungs, and brain, damaging the upper Jiao, leading to diseases in these areas. Such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, pulmonary heart disease, hypertension, stroke, hemiplegia, rhinitis, pharyngitis, thyroid diseases, etc., which are more difficult to treat.

8. The patient's lifestyle habits.
People who lack self-discipline in their daily routine recover slowly. Staying up late, sleeping in in the morning, irregular eating habits... Moxibustion supplements some vital Qi, but staying up late consumes some of it. It's like a bucket with a leak - filling it with water while it's leaking at the same time.

9. The patient's understanding of moxibustion.
Those who have little knowledge about the common sense of moxibustion recover slowly. Patients who are unaware of the general order of moxibustion and the reactions to expelling diseases operate within their limited subjective understanding, which limits the effectiveness.

We say that the principle of moxibustion is to supplement and mobilize the body's genuine Yang Qi, repair damaged cells and organs, restore the functions of the five zang organs, six fu organs, limbs, senses, and all organs, enabling them to operate and balance themselves. When patients experience reactions to expelling diseases, if they do not believe in moxibustion, even reject it, and give up on the self-repair function of the viscera, turning instead to cold treatments such as medication and infusions, over time, the body's self-regulation function gradually decreases and may even be lost. This makes the treatment process slower.
