Heartburn and acid reflux are sensations of burning located in the upper abdomen or lower chest, accompanied by symptoms of acid regurgitation. The most common causes are eating too quickly or in large amounts, or consuming certain specific foods, such as alcohol and chili peppers, all of which can lead to heartburn and acid reflux. Symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux manifest as a burning sensation in the epigastric area, with sour and spicy gastric juices flowing back into the mouth, accompanied by nausea, belching, and pain behind the sternum. These symptoms often occur after overeating or after meals. They are particularly noticeable when lying down or when abdominal pressure increases, and in severe cases, they can wake the patient up at night; food, acidic, and bitter liquids flow back into the mouth; some patients may experience difficulty swallowing, and in severe cases, pain or even bleeding behind the sternum (esophagus). Some patients with heartburn and acid reflux may have atypical symptoms such as abnormal sensations in the throat, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.
It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes. Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course. (If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion. The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)
1. For heartburn, it is important to focus on nourishing the gastrointestinal digestive system, as it is commonly said that "three parts are treated, and seven parts are nourished" for gastrointestinal diseases. 2. Those with acid reflux and heartburn should consume foods with alkaline components, such as soy sauce, spinach, rapeseed, cabbage, and other fresh vegetables and fruits. 3. Limit the intake of acidic foods, such as beans, vinegar, and fatty foods. 4. Avoid consuming condiments that stimulate an increase in stomach acid, such as chili peppers, coffee, and mustard. 5. Opt for noodles as the main food, as they can dilute stomach acid. The alkaline substances in noodles can neutralize stomach acid, and soy milk, porridge, and similar foods can dilute stomach acid and protect the gastric mucosa.
