Moxibustion Treatment

Restless Legs Syndrome

Symptom Analysis

Restless Legs Syndrome is a condition characterized by an uncontrollable, uncomfortable sensation in the lower limbs. It typically occurs during the night while at rest and can be relieved by movement. Because the symptoms worsen at night, patients often suffer from insomnia, which can affect their work, study, and daily life over the long term.

The main clinical manifestation is most common in the calf muscles of the lower limbs, with sensations such as tearing, crawling, tingling, stabbing, burning, and aching discomfort, and it is more common in adults.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Restless Legs Syndrome falls under the category of "Bi Syndrome." It is believed to be caused by external factors such as wind, cold, and dampness that injure the body's Yang energy, or by insufficient Qi and blood. When Qi is deficient, it fails to move the blood properly, leading to Qi stagnation and blood stasis, and eventually, the muscles and tendons lose nourishment, resulting in the symptoms of this condition.

Moxibustion Acupoint Selection

Auxiliary Acupoint Selection

Dampness-Evil Obstruction Type: With a constitutional weakness, exposure to external cold and damp evils, or long-term residence in damp areas, the main symptom is cold pain in the legs; the tongue is dark red, and the pulse is unsmooth.
Hematoma Obstruction Type: Due to falls or impacts, the main symptom is stabbing pain in the legs, with a dark red tongue and an unsmooth pulse.

Treatment Course

It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes. Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course.

(If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion. The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)

Life Tips

1. Before going to bed, wash your feet with warm water or massage the lower limb muscles to maintain a pleasant mood; depression and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms.

2. Pay attention to keeping the legs warm; cold and damp environments can also worsen symptoms.

3. External wash prescription: 15 grams each of Radix Cyathulae, White Peony Root, Curcuma Zedoaria Rhizome, Angelica Pubescens, Mulberry Twig, Lycopodium Clavatum, Caulis Piperis Futokadsurae, Cinnamon Twig, and Saposhnikovia Root, decocted in water for external washing of the feet, once a day, one dose every 3 days, for a continuous 30 days.
