Symptom Analysis

Vitiligo is a common pigmentary skin disorder characterized by local or widespread loss of pigment, forming white patches. It is an acquired, localized or generalized skin pigment loss condition and is a common skin disease that affects appearance.

The condition is an acquired localized white patch due to the loss of skin pigment, making the local skin appear white.

Vitiligo falls under the category of "vitiligo" and "white wind" in Traditional Chinese Medicine. According to Chinese medicine, the pathogenesis of vitiligo is due to the invasion of wind evil, leading to poor circulation of Qi, Qi stagnation causing blood stasis, blood stasis causing dysfunction of the viscera, and the intense wind evil is prone to cold evil, cold coagulating the blood vessels, and blood not nourishing the skin, which leads to the skin losing its luster and nourishment, ultimately resulting in this disease.

Stasis-Type of Vitiligo: The course of the disease is relatively long, with slow progression. The white patches are localized or widely distributed, or only a small amount of normal skin remains, and they rarely expand further. White patches can also occur at the site of injury. The skin lesions are mostly shaped like a map or patch, with clear boundaries and neat edges, appearing dark brown, and do not fade when pressed. The center of the white patches often has island-like brown spots or patches, and there is mild stabbing pain locally; the tongue is dark, with stasis points or stasis patches, and the pulse is sluggish.
Liver Qi Stagnation Type: More common in women, the white patches do not have a fixed location, the color is sometimes dark and sometimes bright, the progression is slow, and it changes with emotional fluctuations. It is also accompanied by bloating in the chest and hypochondria, and menstrual irregularities; the tongue is pale with a thin coating, and the pulse is taut and thin.
Qi and Blood Disharmony Type: The duration of the disease varies, mostly ranging from half a year to three years. The skin lesions are often discovered incidentally, appearing as milky white round or oval shapes, or irregular cloud-like patches, distributed sporadically or overlapping, with no itching or pain within the patches, the number of which is variable and can gradually develop, with blurred boundaries. Additionally, there may be fatigue, a pale complexion, and a weak constitution before the onset of the disease, or a history of mental stress; the tongue is pale, the coating is white, and the pulse is fine and slippery.

Treatment Course

It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes.  Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course.

(If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion.  The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)

Life Tips

1. Develop good habits in daily life, reduce smoking and drinking, eat less spicy food and taboo foods, and maintain an optimistic mood.
2. At work, pay attention to labor protection, reduce direct contact with harmful substances such as chemical raw materials, paint coatings, and heavy metal salts. Be aware of pollution caused by house renovation.
3. Dietary therapy recipe: Wind-Dispelling Soup. Astragalus, drought lotus grass, and black sesame each 25 grams, Angelica sinensis, Ligustrum lucidum, and Polygonum multiflorum each 16 grams, Atractylodes macrocephala and Poria cocos each 10 grams, Psoralea corylifolia and Eucommia ulmoides each 12 grams, licorice 10 grams. Decocted in water, taken once a day, divided into 2 servings.
