Moxibustion Treatment

Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia)

Symptom Analysis

Alzheimer's disease, also known as senile dementia, is a persistent disorder of higher neural functions that occurs during the elderly period and the pre-elderly stage. It is a primary degenerative brain disease that causes障碍 in memory, thinking, analytical judgment, spatial recognition, and emotions, even in the absence of disturbances in consciousness.

This condition mostly begins in old age, with a hidden onset and a slow, irreversible course. Clinically, it is primarily characterized by cognitive impairment, mainly manifesting as memory loss, impaired abstract thinking and calculation, and changes in personality and behavior. Senile dementia that starts before the age of 65 is referred to as pre-senile dementia, often with a family history of the disease, more rapid progression, and common occurrences of aphasia and apraxia.

Moxibustion Acupoint Selection

Auxiliary Acupoint Selection

Spleen and Kidney Deficiency Type: Expression is dull, movements are slow, and even remaining silent and inactive all day, crying and laughing senselessly, requiring assistance with eating, dressing, and daily routines. This condition may also be accompanied by dizziness, blurred vision, soreness in the waist and knees, shortness of breath, palpitations, and other symptoms; the tongue is pale, the coating is thin and white, and the pulse is thin and weak or thin and slippery.
Spleen deficiency and phlegm obstruction type: Remaining silent and inactive all day, not drinking or eating, with sudden laughter or singing, sudden sorrow or crying, not accepting being fed, and not dressing when clothes are given. In severe cases, the patient is unable to take care of themselves, with a pale complexion and shortness of breath and fatigue; the tongue is pale and swollen, the coating is white and greasy, and the pulse is fine and slippery.

Treatment Course

It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes. Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course.

(If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion. The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)

Life Tips

1. Elderly patients with dementia often forget to take their medication or may accidentally take the wrong medication, or they may forget they have already taken it, leading to an overdose. Therefore, someone must accompany elderly individuals when they take medication to ensure they take it all and do not forget or take it incorrectly.

2. Precautions for medication: For dementia patients with depression, hallucinations, and suicidal tendencies, family members must manage the medication well and keep it out of reach or in a place where the patient cannot find it.

3. Dietary therapy recipe: Walnut porridge. 40 grams of walnuts, 200 grams of japonica rice, and 10 jujubes are washed together and placed in a pot. Cook over low heat until it becomes porridge. Take twice daily.
