Hyperlipidemia is a condition where the metabolism or transport of fats is abnormal, leading to higher than normal levels of one or more types of lipids in the plasma. Mild hyperlipidemia usually does not have any discomfort. Over time, patients may experience symptoms such as dizziness, fatigue, insomnia, forgetfulness, numbness in the limbs, chest distress, and palpitations. In more severe cases, symptoms like facial muscle weakness, inability to speak, and limb numbness may occur, ultimately leading to serious diseases such as coronary heart disease and stroke, with corresponding manifestations. Hyperlipidemia falls under the categories of "phlegm-dampness" and "consumptive disease" in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is believed that this condition is related to the liver, kidneys, and spleen. The decline in the spleen's transportation and transformation function, the kidneys' control of water, the liver's failure to relieve Qi, and the accumulation of phlegm-dampness in the body contribute to the development of hyperlipidemia.
Phlegm-Dampness Internal Obstruction Type: This type is more common in obese individuals, who often experience frequent dizziness and headache, chest and epigastric fullness, and even nausea and vomiting of phlegm and saliva, a feeling of heaviness in the body and limbs, and fatigue and lethargy; the tongue is pale, with tooth marks on the edges, a white slippery and greasy coating, and a moist and slippery pulse.
Liver and Kidney Yin Deficiency Type: Commonly seen in individuals over middle age who are not overweight, they often experience dizziness, tinnitus, headaches, numbness in the limbs, soreness in the waist and knees, dry mouth and throat, hotness in the five centers (chest, two palms, and two soles), forgetfulness, and difficulty sleeping; the tongue is red with little coating, and the pulse is thin and rapid.
Liver and Gallbladder Stagnation Type: Patients are usually depressed in temperament, emotionally restless, often sighing, accompanied by chest tightness, lower abdominal or hypochondriac pain, epigastric fullness with belching, and acid regurgitation of bitter fluid. Women may experience menstrual irregularities, breast distension, and abdominal pain before menstruation; the tongue is pale, with a thin white coating, and the pulse is taut.
Spleen and Kidney Yang Deficiency Type: Patients are often obese, with a decline in physical and mental vigor, frequently experiencing dizziness, tinnitus, loose teeth, sore and weak waist and knees, aversion to cold, cold hands and feet, abdominal bloating, poor appetite, gurgling intestines, and diarrhea, impotence, and spermatorrhea; the tongue is pale and swollen, with tooth marks on the edges, a white and greasy coating in the center and root, and the pulse is deep, thin, and slow.
It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes. Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course. (If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion. The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)
