Indigestion (Abdominal Bloating, Distended Stomach)

Symptom Analysis

Indigestion refers to a clinical syndrome characterized by symptoms caused by gastric and duodenal dysfunction, where organic diseases that cause these symptoms have been excluded upon examination. The main symptoms include one or more of upper abdominal pain, a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, postprandial bloating, and early satiety, which can coexist with upper abdominal distension, belching, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, etc. It is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder in clinical practice.

Cold Evil Directly Affecting the Middle Type: Sudden onset of stomach pain, even with spasmodic pain, alleviated by warmth and exacerbated by cold, indifferent to taste without thirst, or prefers warm drinks; thin and white tongue coating, taut and tight pulse.
Diet Stagnation Type: After overeating or binge drinking, there is abdominal pain, persistent bloating, pain that worsens with pressure, and worsening pain after eating, belching with a foul smell, or vomiting undigested food with a rotten odor, pain alleviates after vomiting, loss of appetite or aversion to food, uncomfortable bowel movements, slight relief after passing gas or having a bowel movement; the tongue coating is thick and greasy, and the pulse is slippery and strong.
Liver Qi Invading the Stomach Type: Abdominal bloating, pain with a feeling of distention, pain in the epigastric region radiating to the hypochondria, chest tightness with belching, tendency to sigh deeply, irregular bowel movements, relief after belching or passing gas, pain triggered or exacerbated by irritability or anger; thin and white tongue coating, taut pulse.

Middle Viscera Deficiency and Cold Type: Persistent and intermittent abdominal pain that is alleviated by pressure and warmth, aggravated by hunger and fatigue, and relieved by eating or resting. Patients may exhibit fatigue, shortness of breath, and reluctance to speak, cold extremities, poor appetite, loose stools, and a dull complexion. The tongue appears pale with a thin white coating, and the pulse is deep and fine.

Treatment Course

It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes.  Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course.

(If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion.  The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)

Life Tips

1. Emphasize the regulation of daily life. Diet should follow the principle of small frequent meals, rich nutrition, light and easily digestible, avoiding alcohol and overconsumption of raw, cold, and spicy foods, and refraining from rough and hard diets, overeating, or irregular eating habits.

2. Maintain a pleasant mood, avoid emotional tension, combine work and rest, and avoid overexertion.

3. Dietary therapy recipe: Buddha's Hand Porridge. 30 grams of Buddha's Hand, decocted to remove residue, 150 grams of millet, add an appropriate amount of water to cook porridge, after the porridge is ready, add rock sugar and Buddha's Hand medicinal juice to cook. Suitable for the elderly with weak stomachs causing indigestion, belching, and stomach pain.
