Moxibustion Treatment

Ménière's disease (Meniere's syndrome)

Symptom Analysis

Ménière's disease is an idiopathic inner ear disorder, formerly known as Meniere's disease, first described in 1861 by French physician Prosper Ménière. The main pathological change in this condition is the accumulation of endolymphatic fluid, with clinical manifestations including recurrent episodes of rotational vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and a feeling of ear fullness. This disease is most common in middle-aged and young individuals between the ages of 30 and 50, and is rare in children. There is no significant difference in the incidence between males and females. Bilateral involvement occurs in 10% to 50% of cases.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ménière's syndrome is often attributed to spleen deficiency, leading to a deficiency of qi and blood; or spleen dysfunction, resulting in the improper distribution of water and dampness, which accumulates into phlegm and fluid retention, causing turbidity to ascend and obscure the clear orifices; or prolonged illness affecting the kidneys, with kidney yang deficiency and the upward attack of cold water; or kidney yin deficiency, where water does not nourish wood, leading to liver yang hyperactivity, the transformation of fire and wind, and the upward disturbance of wind and fire; or liver wind carrying phlegm to ascend and disturb; or kidney essence deficiency, all of which can trigger this condition. This disease is often characterized by a fundamental deficiency with superficial excess, especially with spleen and kidney deficiency and liver yang hyperactivity being the most common causes.

Treatment Course

It is recommended to perform moxibustion once a day, targeting 2 to 3 acupoints each time, with each acupoint being treated for 30 to 40 minutes. Rotate the points treated, with a 10-day period constituting one course of treatment, and then rest for 2 to 3 days before continuing with the next course.

(If time permits and there is a need, more acupoints can be treated with moxibustion. The specific duration should be adjusted according to one's own physical needs.)
